Science laboratories

Separate Physics, Chemistry and Biology laboratories, used for the practical syllabus rather than for demonstration alone.

Practical work

Experiments done, not described

Each science has its own laboratory so that apparatus stays where it belongs and practical periods are not spent setting up. Pupils record observations in a laboratory notebook that is checked and signed, which is also how the practical component of the board examination is prepared.

Safety is taught alongside method: aprons in Chemistry, correct handling of glassware and reagents, and a clear rule that nobody works in a laboratory without a teacher present.

Equipment

What each laboratory holds

  • Physics: optical benches, electrical circuit boards, meters, weights and measuring instruments.
  • Chemistry: fume provision, reagent store, balances, burettes and titration sets.
  • Biology: microscopes, prepared slides, dissection and specimen collections, charts and models.
  • A laboratory assistant to prepare apparatus before each practical period.
  • First-aid provision and clearly marked safety instructions in every laboratory.
  • Record notebooks maintained by pupils and signed by the subject teacher.
